Discover South Westland
There are some amazing walks – Hunts Beach, Bruce Bay Beach, Jamie Creek, Paringa/Haast Cattle Track, Monro Beach, Murphy Beach, Ship Creek – to name a few.
You may see Fiordland Crested penguins, seals, bountiful birdlife, wild brown trout and Chinook salmon, various species of whitebait, eels and feral red deer.
Southern South Westland is famous for its whitebait. Each spring an amazing phenomenon occurs. The juvenile whitebait, the tiny, glass-like form of several species of small native fish, return from the sea to fresh water en mass. The whitebait season, an open season allowing the commercial catch of these tiny delicacies, runs from 1st September to 14th November each year, and produces an influx of fishers to the area, all hoping to catch a share of the harvest.
The Haast area can definitely claim the title as ‘The Whitebait Capital of the World’, with many of the South Westland rivers producing bountiful harvest. At the Salmon Farm and Café we serve up the delicacy, caught from our own whitebait ‘stand’, during the season in a Giant Whitebait Sandwich. Most of the year around you will find supplies of whitebait and whitebait patties at the Curly Tree Whitebait Company at the Waita River north of Haast.
One of the best kept secrets of the area is the abundant brown trout and salmon fishery. Surf Casting from the beaches and fishing in the river mouths can also be very rewarding; it is essential though to take your insect repellent when venturing near the water in South Westland.
